Founded in 1975 in London, United Kingdom, the University of Roehampton is an internationally recognised public institution devoted to research. An association of four teacher training colleges was founded in the 19th century, and the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education was established due to the merger. Although the university has been referred to as Roehampton University since 2004, its current name was only given to it in 2011. The university is affiliated with the European University Association, Universities UK, and the Compostela Group.
